3 Steps to Great Results in 2018

Raise your hand if you promised yourself to work harder at your drumming in 2017 but never did it. If your hand is raised right now, don’t worry, you are not alone, we’ve all been guilty of that at some point. Life gets in the way, we get lazy, come up with excuses, and 365 days later we find ourselves very far from where we imagined. I’m here to tell you that there’s a solution, and I’ll list a few of the steps you can implement to give yourself a better chance of achieving your drumming goals in 2018.

1. Set Clear Goals

Let me start with the most important step of all, setting clear goals. If you don’t know your destination, you might end up roaming aimlessly and never getting anywhere. This is decision-making time, you need to decide what you want out of the work you’ll put in, and you need to be as specific as possible. “I want to be a better drummer” is not going to cut it. “I want to improve my licks” is better, but still too open-ended. “I want to be able to play 16th note licks fluently by December” is a much clearer goal, with better chances of success. The more specific your goals are, the better your chances of achieving it. When you know exactly what the result should look like, it becomes easier to know where you stand in relation to it, and what you need to adjust to continue in the correct direction to achieve it. If you don’t know what to work on, start with your biggest weakness.

2. Have A Detailed Plan

Now that your goal is as clear as day, you can put together a plan to achieve it. Again, you need to be as detailed as possible about it, but try not to overthink it. It is very common for people to get stuck in this part of the journey, so keep in mind that taking action and moving forward is something that needs to happen sooner rather than later. Put together a practice plan that will take you through the first 90 days or so, once you get close to the end of it, evaluate your progress, adjust the plan as needed, and go again for the next 90 days. You can do the same with short-term goals, just keep in mind that you need to step back every once in a while, in order to assess your own progress. Put your ego aside and take a hard look at your progress periodically, make sure you are going in the right direction and set sail again until the next assessment.

3. Ease Yourself Into It

I’m sure you have heard clichés like: “Give it everything you’ve got”, “Do it until you can’t do it anymore”, etc. That is a great mindset to help you get motivated and work hard every time, but if you are not used to working like that, giving everything you’ve got right from the start will most likely get you burned out. It’s more productive in the long run if you ease yourself into the new program. Someone who’s used to practice 30 minutes a day will feel absolutely overwhelmed to start practicing 3-4 hours a day overnight. That type of radical and sudden change can be too difficult to keep up, which may result in a decrease in motivation, and eventually make you give up completely on your goal.

You now have three new tricks in your bag to help you stay on the road to your drumming goals. It's a good idea to make these steps into a habit, so you don't waste any time trying to keep up with achieving your goal, but actually stay on top of it. Good luck and all the best in 2018!
